AVATAR!!!!

I saw Avatar yesterday and it was amazing!!

Better than the previews, 3D was the best I've seen (much better than the Cowboys football game!) and the CGI seemed real (as strange as it is to say that considering you are watching 12 foot tall blue people!)

A must see!

A little R&R

The Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call - New Orleans

I've written about the brilliance of Werner Herzog before, and stand by it. That being said (Thank you Larry David!), this film may scare you off from watching any of his others (PLEASE don't let that happen!)

Without getting too into it, the movie is about a cops descent in a Post Katrina New Orleans.  I won't ruin any of the 'plot', but understand going in that it doesn't have a typical narrative, and there are parts that you will wonder what kind of drugs Nick Cage was really on (not to mention the director).  You will however see some amazing performances (imagine NC in Leaving Las Vegas as apposed to National Treasure), as well as some great locations in New Orleans that will appreciate what life is really like there.

I thought this movie was great, but I can see how people feel otherwise.

You've been warned about this recommendation!

What I've been up to lately...

Went to Dallas last weekend to see the Cowboys - Chargers game, and while the Cowboys didn't look so good, the scoreboard did!

If you haven't heard about the scoreboard that was put into the new stadium, it is the biggest HD screen in the world!  The thing stretches across almost 60 Yards and is as clear a picture as you have ever seen!

picture of the scoreboard from our seats

To put it in prospective, this screen is 160' wide x 72' high.  The standard IMAX screen is 72' x 53'.  Watching it was almost like being at the game...

...Wait a second....

While we were there, they stepped it up by having the 3rd quarter broadcast in 3D (because the biggest HD screen in the world isn't enough)... I shit you not, they actually handed out those blue and red glasses and during the 3rd quarter, the action was all in 3D...

The novelty wore off within about 2 minutes, and everyone in the stadium had their glasses off and were watching the actual game with normal size cheerleaders players.

I'm a big fan of 3D when it's done well and for the right media... Riding a rollercoaster, diving in the Ocean, watching Beowulf or a Pixar cartoon, Absolutely!  Watching a football game on a screen that is already amazing when I'm AT THE GAME... Not so much

Inglourious Basterd

If you're a Tarantino fan (which you should be), here's his short list for best films of 2009

btw, if you liked Tony Jaa (Ong-Bak), the movie he mentions, Chocolate, is by the same director with 'the female Tony Jaa' kicking ass!

Keeping on the Tarantino theme,  check out this commercial....

No, I don't get it either!

Working Hard

Hot Links

I found a strange twitter link from Roger Ebert...   I guess he's old enough to have gone from Pervert to Dirty Old Man, but I didn't expect him to make it public!

Sticking with that theme, if you thought Nathon Fillion was funny in PG Porn, they have another installment out. This time staring that warehouse guy from The Office... Check it out Here.  Warning, it seems NSFW, and people will ask what you are watching when you laugh out loud!

And an oldy but a goody... if you never saw Mother Lovers, the sequel to Dick in a Box, then here it is...

Reality Shows Anonymous

I thought I had quit it.  It had been years. I had no  interest in it anymore, what could just one episode hurt. I won't even pay attention. I'll just watch a little and then move on to something else.

I should have known.

Once and addict, always and addict.  That one episode turned into 10... And I don't plan on stopping now!

Sweet Survivor, I could never leave you!!!!

At least not while Russell is around!!!

He had me hooked when he burned that guys socks!!!!

And speaking of being addicted to reality shows, I guess showing this clip is like passing over a crack pipe!

It's snowing which made me think of another great film you've probably never seen!

My recommendation of a small budget Canadian film based on an Inuit legend, where everyone speaks Inuktitut, and starring all non-actors would normally cause my friends to roll their eyes at me.  I've learnt my lesson of even trying to recommend art-house films that fit similar descriptions because one bad recommendation will cause them to ignore the next 10 movies that I know they really would like, but now will never see because I recommend them!

Knowing this, and knowing how badly I want everyone to listen to the next 10 recommendations, I stand by this and implore you to watch Atanarjuat: The Fast Runner.

Filmed entirely in the Igloolik region of Northern Canada, this is a movie that was meant to be seen on Blu-ray (although it seems it's only available on regular DVD). The scenes of life in the Arctic want me to watch my Planet Earth dvd again, and the any description of the sounds of snow seem silly until you hear this movie in Stereo...

Sorry, I'm scaring you off again!

Maybe I should mention that this movie also contains adultery, murder, a shaman's curse, and revenge!

What happens in a society where there is no concept of 'Police' and there is a murder?  When the Leaders of the village (is that what you call it?) are not good people or don't like you?

I don't want to ruin any of this movie as it is something that has to be seen to be appreciated, and yes, I know that the beginning is a little confusing and a few parts seem a little slow, but keep your mind open and appreciate it. It's like nothing you have ever seen before

Some facts about the Fast Runner:

~ You'll notice that there is no warning in the film regarding "No animal was harmed in the making of this film" because there were.  However, every animal killed was used in true Inuit fashion; all the meat was consumed, and the skins were put to practical use.

~ Atanarjuat was the first feature film ever to be written, directed and acted entirely in Inuktitut, the language of Canada's Inuit people.

~ Atanarjuat was filmed with an all-Inuit cast in Inuktitut on location under extreme conditions. To achieve this on a modest $1.9 million budget.  Some perspective: Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End had a budget of over $300 million!

If you like/ liked this film, also see Whale Rider... I'm sure I'll review it one day!
